It is our pleasure to announce that the Eastern Europe Nurses’ Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control – Developing Nurse Champions for Tobacco Dependence Treatment“ (EE-COE II.) project will being February 2017.
The Society for Treatment of Tobacco Dependence (STTD) and the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) are pleased to announce thel "Eastern Europe Nurses’ Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control – Developing Nurse Champions for Tobacco Dependence Treatment“ (EE-COE II.)" . This new project will continue the efforts of the Eastern Europe Nurses’ Centre of Excellence for Tobacco Control (EE-COE) as additional funding support has been committed by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The next phase of this program will involve the five countries from the first phase of the program - Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia - and will also expand into the Republic of Moldova.
The project will be led by Iveta Nohavova and Prof. Eva Kralikova of the Society for Treatment of Tobacco Dependence (STTD) in Prague. Dr. Stella Bialous, of the University of California at San Francisco and ISNCC, will provide additional expert guidance and support. Dr. Linda Sarna, Dean, and her team at the University of California, Los Angeles will also continue to provide guidance for the project’s implementation. The partners for the project include nursing organizations, university teams and hospitals from the participating countries.
The project’s overall goals are to:
1. Increase nurses’ knowledge and leadership capacity in tobacco dependence treatment,
2. Contribute to cancer prevention efforts, and
3. Create opportunities to influence nursing education and practice standards through advocacy in Central and Eastern Europe.
The project will consist of a variety of targeted activities such as in-person workshops, online e-learning education and public events. Importantly, a key focus will be to identify and support nurses who are ready to take on leadership roles in advancing tobacco control in the region. Patients and their families will benefit through the increase in the knowledge and ability of nurses to conduct smoking intervention efforts and engage in advocacy
“We are proud to support the expansion of this program as nurses play a significant role in the care of patients and in empowering them to manage their own health. With the proper education and leadership skills focused on tobacco cessation, nurses can significantly contribute to cancer prevention efforts in the 6 nations in eastern Europe,“ says John Damonti, president of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.
