The Tobacco Free Nurses Nursing Leadership
project is a collaborative effort between the University of California
Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute (DCFI), with funding
from the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center. Our goal is to assist nurse
leaders and their organizations in addressing tobacco control issues.
We focus our efforts in three areas: (1) increasing the proportion of
nurses who assist patients to quit; (2) decreasing the prevalence of tobacco
use among nurses, particularly among low socioeconomic and racial/ethnic
populations, and (3) increasing nursing involvement in tobacco control
policy efforts in their organizations at the community, state, and/or
national levels. Our major functions include providing technical assistance
to nursing leaders; forging relationships and coalitions between nursing
and the tobacco control communities; showcasing
nurse leaders' tobacco control activities through conference sessions,
materials, and this website; and disseminating information about smoking
cessation and tobacco control to nurses and nursing organizations.
We enjoy the cooperation and support of several nursing organizations
that convened at the first-ever summit of nursing organizations
in March 2004 at the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality in Gaithersburg,
MD.
