Making a Difference—Nurses Help Cancer Patients Quit Smoking

One of the most cost-effective ways to improve the care of many patients with cancer is to help smokers stop smoking. Quitting increases a patient’s chances of responding to a particular treatment and it can reduce complications as well as the risk of a recurrence—all of which can save precious health care resources.

Tobacco Free Nurses is the first national program created with the objectives of helping nurses quit, providing resources to nurses who want to help their patients quit and to promote tobacco control in the agenda of nursing organizations.

Helping Patients Quit Smoking: A Guide for Nurses

Developed by USDHHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in collaboration with Tobacco Free Nurses, this guide helps nurses encourage patients to quit smoking. Read more or download the guide as a PDF.

Our secret weapon against smoking? Each other. Tobacco Free Nurses recognizes the power that the 3 million nurses in the US can have in making difference in the nation’s efforts to combat the tobacco epidemic and seeks to foster the pivotal role of nurses in tobacco control.

On this website nurses will find numerous resources specifically targeted to nurses, including a library of references written by or about nurses and tobacco control, evidence-based resources to use in clinical practice, media materials for free download with various fact sheets about nurses and smoking. Please note that the “Helping Smokers Quit” tab is only available to nurses participating in one of our current research studies.

A free resource, which has proven to be effective in helping many people quit, is the national telephone Quitline, 1-800-Quit Now (800-784-8669). Callers receive one-on-one counseling and follow up. Where available, you will be referred to your state’s quitline.
